December 2023 - The Enduring Disorder Continues
We've been pondering, is there any semblance of order at all in today's international affairs? As bleak as things are vis-a-vis Trump's dodging justice, atrocities in Israel/Gaza, Ukraine's stalled offensive, and corruption in the very process meant to fight climate change, the Disorder podcast is dedicating to calling a spade a spade, searching for interconnections, and proposing solutions.
The Disorder Podcast October Newsletter with a Focus on the Israel-Hamas War
These are undeniably dark days and as fear, anger, grief, and devastation fill our screens, this latest in a series of crises is yet more evidence that our international system is in freefall. The brutality and horror unleashed in southwestern Israel on October the 7th know few parallels in modern history. It was only able to come about due to a disordered international system and the incompetence and divisiveness of neopopulist leaders. These are undeniably dark days and as fear, anger, grief, and devastation fill our screens, this latest in a series of crises is yet more evidence that our international system is in freefall. July 2023
A military coup in Niger and yet another threat of nuclear catastrophe in Ukraine punctuated this month's headlines. In less than surprising news, climate change triggered wildfires from Canada to Greece, while deadly floods devastated parts of China and India, in what was the world's hottest month since records began…
May 2023
Bakhmut falls, Erdogan leads and DeSantis blunders the launch of his White House Bid as hundreds of thousands flee fighting in Sudan... can the disorder be quelled or contained?
To many it was barely news when the World Meteorological Organisation announced that for the first time, global temperatures are more likely than not to reach 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.5 degrees Farenheit) within the next five years. In Russia, it was certainly news when the first Ukrainian partisan attacks on Russian soil in Belgorod with the aim of capturing Russian territory. Meanwhile, warring generals continue to battle in Sudan while the dust settles from yet another round of violence between Israel and Gaza.
To discuss this and other manifestations of our Enduring Disorder, please join us on June 9th at 5pm SOAS University in London is hosting an event in the SOAS Main Building, Khalili Lecture Theatre, Torrington Square, London, with Jason Pack to commemorate the Arabic translation of his book, in conversation with John McHugo (author of 'Concise History of the Arabs', Board Member at CAABU) and Tim Eaton (Senior Research Fellow at Chatham House)…
April 2023
The primary dynamics of the Global Disorder are showcased yet again by the evolving situation in Sudan. As developments there spiral out of control and further suck in disordering actors like the Wagner Group, Western embassies are high tailing out of the country rather than trying to mediate a solution…

December 2022

November 2022
This November, the NATO & the Global Enduring Disorder project has examined: the US and Brazilian election results as indicators that certain Western demographics are tiring of neo-populist bluster; Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine facilitating elegant NATO coordination and compromise but causing troubles at the UN; how Iran's football team has the power to topple a regime; and more that you can read about on our site. As November closes…
October 2022
With October drawing to a close, we have seen new aspects of the Global Enduring Disorder revealing themselves through a range of novel and interconnected international developments. This month, our Project Leads and Fellows have examined…
September 2022
As September ends, the Global Enduring Disorder continues to permeate international affairs. India and China's shifting positions towards Putin's War in Ukraine were on display at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, indicating that many of the world's disordering powers are increasingly tired of Putin's war. Some developments are giving us measured optimism, such as…
August 2022
August has been quite a month for our Global Enduring Disorder. From China threatening military action as Pelosi visited Taiwan to a hacker group selling classified NATO documents online. Darina Dugina's death has added fuel to Russia's war in Ukraine, and record-breaking heatwaves and droughts are still impacting Europe, North America, and China. The need for strong collective action to address global challenges and keep aggressive nations in check is as necessary as ever…
June 2022
Every month, we hope to write to you from a more ordered world, but this June, despite some steps in the right direction (like Sweden and Finland clearing Turkey’s objection to join NATO), our hopes remain largely unfulfilled. As the forces of Order make various strides forward, they always seem to be outpaced by the forces of Disorder…
May 2022
As we enter May, the dynamics of the Global Enduring Disorder, like the conflict in Ukraine, appear increasingly entrenched and protracted. The relative stalemate in the War in the Donbas, the refusal of India and China to impose sanctions on Russia, the narrow loss of neo-populist Marie Le Pen in France’s election, and Australia’s anger over China’s secretive security pact with the Solomon Islands, all seem to be leading to a sense that more of the same is the order of the day…
April 2022
The War in Ukraine is dragging into its second month. Word of mass atrocities are circulating around the globe, while the Kremlin is attempting to shift both its narrative and its war objectives. Welcome back to the Global Enduring Disorder Newsletter…
March 2022
There is now fairly universal agreement that we are no longer living in the Post-Cold War World. As Jason has argued in his writings over the last three years, the world seems to have transitioned from a hegemonic US-led international system to an interregnum in the global order. Welcome to the Global Enduring Disorder Newsletter…
